Hudson Valley Grapes

J. Stephen Casscles, owner of the Cedar Cliff Vineyards and Nursery, Athens, NY and author of the book Grapes of the Hudson Valley and Other Cool Climate Regions, will give a talk on the many local grape varieties bred in 19th century Hudson Valley and Boston’s North Shore. The talk will cover locally bred grape varieties and those pioneer local grape breeders who created them such as J.H.Ricketts of Newburgh, who developed the grape varieties (Jefferson, Empire State, Bacchus), A.J. Caywood of Marlboro,(Dutchess), Dr. William Grant of Iona Island (Iona, Eumelan), and the Underhill Family of Croton Point (Croton).

The talk will cover how to establish a small home vineyard, how to grow and prune these varieties, as well as most other grape varieties, and what the resultant local grape varieties taste like. Additionally, the talk will include time to answer any questions the group has on growing grapes, making wine, and/or the horticultural history of our area and weave in information about 19th century fruit growing in the Hudson Valley, and conclude with a book signing of his book Grapes of the Hudson Valley.
